2. A Brief Description of the Case. Case #1 The article provides cases on how digital stories are used in a 6th grade language arts teacher class and in a math class. In addition, each case focuses on the ways to guide students in planning, writing, and orally telling their story before they begin creating the digital presentation.
3. The Purpose of the Innovation - Digital Storytelling is a way to enhance students’ critical thinking, expository writing and media skills
4. The technology and resources involved (e.g. facility, network, equipment, software, online program)
A scanner to add photos into the digital story. USB microphone to add narration into the story. A Video camera to add video. Macintosh computer needs the IMovie software to create a digital story and for a PC Moviemaker is recommended.
5. What prior skills and knowledge are required of students? Story mapping and practicing written and oral storytelling
6. What are students asked to accomplish exactly (product or process? Students are given a diagram to outline the beginning of a story to the end. This helps them visualize the progress of the story. They include the seven story elements as they plan their characters and actions, students include how each element on the story map will be illustrated in their story. Once the story map is completed the teacher provides feedback to help the student strengthen the story elements before the student starts writing.
7. What are the procedures of the project (steps to teach the technology skills)? Students will complete the story board and story map, the students collect images to include in their story map and sound then they begin to construct the story into Moviemaker.
8. What are the advantages of the project? The advantages of the project is that is allows students to construct their thoughts and ideas into writing and then produce a visual movie with pictures and sound. Digital storytelling is an innovative way for every person to have the opportunity to share their story
9. What are the disadvantages of the project? the time-consuming quality of creating a digital storytelling project. Student might be tempted to make the digital story more about the technology and less about the story. 10. What types of effective instructional strategies are included? Use modeling, feedback, discussion, and guided practice. After the storytelling performance, ask the audience, “What did the storyteller do to make this a good storytelling? What sounds, expressions, and movements did the storyteller do well?” You want students to focus on how the story was told, not the content. Specifically, you want them to think about how well the storyteller used sound, movement, and expression to tell the story. After several students have shared the positives, ask “What could the storyteller do to make the performance even better?” You want the performer to internalize the process so it becomes self-evaluation (“What can I do to make my performance better?”).
11. What are the possibilities that the innovation can be transferred to other teachers, subject content and different school settings? The use of digital storytelling is compatible for any subject area. There are online software tutorial to provide instructions for IMovie or Moviemaker. Digital storytelling is great for all students: ESL, Special education. digital stories used to combine storytelling, critical thinking, and report writing in all content areas.

3. The Purpose of the Innovation – IMovie is used to create videos for storytelling and allow video editing. Students are able to display their thoughts and feelings and share them with an audience.
4. The technology and resources involved (e.g. facility, network, equipment, software, online program). Photographs and images drew by hand or on the computer. All computers connected to a network service that is designed to import scanned images easier. Scanner and digital camcorder.
5. What prior skills and knowledge are required of students
Students are expected to write compositions that traditionally contain at least four five-sentence paragraphs. Requiring students to include a hook to their introductions
6. What are students asked to accomplish exactly (product or process? To create a story that has an effective hook, images, voice tone and music to share with the class.
7. What are the procedures of the project (steps to teach the technology skills After student create their model digital place story, students need to learn two major iMovie skills: how to bring
images, music, and voice into the computer (importing) and how to sequence them according to their story (drag and drop). There are many features about the program that students figure out on their own. Little time is needed to teach the direct iMovie skills. Very little time is needed to teach direct iMovie
skills. Students feel more like authors/producers when they are deciding what music to use or how to transition from one image to the next.
8. What are the advantages of the project? The project allowed students to find voice, structure and confidence in their writings. Students are able to share their stories in a positive classroom environment. Research skills, writing and reading skills, real world use of technology, and video editing skills are used by the students 9. What are the disadvantages of the project the project required an extraordinary amount of flexibility in how to organize class time.
10. What types of effective instructional strategies are included? The teacher creates a model of what students are expected to complete. Using a story coaching approach to get students to gain trust and share their ideas and feelings. Then students began writing their stories, illustrating and collecting images and selecting music to match the feelings of the place.
11. What are the possibilities that the innovation can be transferred to other teachers, subject content and different school settings?Science, mathematics, and reading instruction are enhanced through digital video. To create documentaries, historical reenactments, and news reports on
current events. To record science experiments, create environmental documentaries, and
present their science projects. To create digital stories and poetry, bring journal writing to life, and
produce movie adaptations of literature. •To present difficult and abstract math concepts, enabling teachers to more
effectively assess their knowledge.
